The storage of intermediate and finished products is central to intralogistics, as it decouples production processes in terms of time. Storage space is expensive, so efficient warehouse management is crucial.

Example of crane storage at Kronospan

in 2025, we realised an automated crane warehouse in Denmark. In the old warehouse, stacks of panels were stored manually in a fixed grid, which left a lot of empty space for smaller stacks. The new system operates autonomously and organises the storage locations dynamically. Stacks are placed as close together as possible, limited only by the crane mechanism. Different panel dimensions, stack heights and remaining stacks are taken into account.

Warehouse management functions

Dynamic storage:

• Stacks are clearly identified and assigned to the item data.
• Dimensions are analysed to calculate the optimum space.
• Single-variety storage minimises stock transfers.
• Space optimisation and stack height control increase efficiency.
• Storage zones for production and despatch are managed differently.

Automatic stock transfer:

• Required materials from lower levels are automatically released.
• Temporary interim storage secures the material flow.

ERP integration:

• Warehouse stock and ERP system are synchronised.
• Requirement notifications automatically generate crane transport orders for production.
